Prune
Roses if you have not already done so.
A good time to severely prune evergreens,
and summer flowering shrubs. DO NOT prune shrubs that
flower in spring such as Indian Hawthorn or Azaleas. You will be cutting
off their flower buds!
Cleanup
Crape Myrtles if you have not already done so. We recommend minor
pruning Many people feel Crapes should be pruned back severely,
the latest research indicates that this is not necessary. You may
however decide to do this for aesthetic reasons. Either way you should
shape them now.
Apply
dormant oil to control scale and other insect problems. Some dormant
oils can damage vegetation if it is applied when the outside temperature
is too hot, that is why winter application is recommended.
Water
plants thoroughly if a hard freeze is predicted. The best protection
from a hard freeze is a thorough watering beforehand.
This
is one of the better times for major tree pruning.
Cut
back Liriope if you have not already done so. Be sure it is Liriope
and not Monkey Grass before you do this!
Bed
preparation - Add compost, composted manure, or other organic materials
to your beds. There is still time to solarize your freshly tilled
beds. This is a process of covering the beds with plastic in order
to smother existing weeds.
Do
your winter cleanup of leaves, frozen plants, debris, etc
