FEBRUARY
Prune Roses if you have not already done so. 

A good time to severely prune evergreens, and summer flowering shrubs. DO NOT prune shrubs that flower in spring such as Indian Hawthorn or Azaleas. You will be cutting off their flower buds! 

Cleanup Crape Myrtles if you have not already done so. We recommend minor pruning  Many people feel Crapes should be pruned back severely, the latest research indicates that this is not necessary. You may however decide to do this for aesthetic reasons. Either way you should shape them now. 

Apply dormant oil to control scale and other insect problems. Some dormant oils can damage vegetation if it is applied when the outside temperature is too hot, that is why winter application is recommended. 

 

Water plants thoroughly if a hard freeze is predicted. The best protection from a hard freeze is a thorough watering beforehand.  

This is one of the better times for major tree pruning. 

Cut back Liriope if you have not already done so. Be sure it is Liriope and not Monkey Grass before you do this! 

Bed preparation - Add compost, composted manure, or other organic materials to your beds. There is still time to solarize your freshly tilled beds. This is a process of covering the beds with plastic in order to smother existing weeds.  

Do your winter cleanup of leaves, frozen plants, debris, etc
